William A. Starna (Get this book)
Starna has written a meticulous
ethnohistory of the Mahicans, from their Hudson Valley roots to their
present federally recognized status as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community
in Wisconsin. The author is exacting in his use of primary documents and
ethnological literature, depicting aboriginal Mahican land tenure and
economy, contacts with Natives and Europeans, effects of epidemics,
population decline, fur trade, warfare, and adjustments to Dutch and
then English hegemony. Summing Up: Highly
